ABSTRACT
Ophiolites originate from oceanic crust
and mantle material generated by
seafloor spreading at oceanic ridges or
marginal sea basins. Their presence over
volcanic arcs or continental crusts
requires a mechanism that can explain
the emplacement of such dense ophiolitic
material unto lighter material such as
volcanic arcs or continental masses.
Such mechanism operates in general in a
convergent margin setting where the
ophiolites ride over long and flat-lying
thrust faults (nappes). In very minor
and usually contestable circumstances,
ophiolite presence along shear zones may
also suggest a significant role by
strike-slip movements This paper
recounts several ophiolite emplacement
mechanisms developed in recent years and
modeled from various examples the world
over. Particular attention is given to
Philippine examples.
