ABSTRACT
Placer platinum-group minerals were
recently found in Iaterite overlying the
ophiolitic rocks in Barobo and Bigan
areas, Eastern Samar, and in Malinao
area, Dinagat lsland, Philippines.
Results of geochemical survey for
platinum-group elements (PGE) and gold
in the area are presented. Field
observations and geochemical analyses
have detected two types of positive
anomalies of PGE; one in chromitite from
Samar Island, and the other in Iateritic
soil at Laot in Dinagat Island.
Comparison of PGE abundance in
chromitite and lateritic soil with that
in the host rock shows that geochemical
survey of refractory PGE such as osniium
and iridium is as important as that of
platinum and palladium to evaluate the
PGE potential in an ophiolitic
environment.
