ABSTRACT
This paper aims to provide a broader
perspective on the Stegodon which is the
subject of a
research paper here in the National
Institute of Geological Sciences owing
to the recent fossil
finds in the Antipolo area.
The Stegodon is classified as a
Paenungulate (near-ungulate) because of
its rather primitive
legs, with several digits without
well-marked hoofs. Paenungulate incisors
and canines often
become reduced to single pairs of large
tusks in each jaw and the molars are
specialized for
grinding, with the development of cross
ridges, The Stegodon and the modern
elephants for that matter further
classified into the Family Elephantidae
