INTRODUCTION |
The four-year work program on the
mineral resources development of Samar
and Leyte Islands was completed and the
project was successful in assessing and
evaluating the mineral potential of both
islands, as well as in providing basic
geological data needed for any
infra-structure development of both
islands.
Among the highlights of the project are
the discovery of bauxite deposit and the
delineation of copper prospects in
Lawaan, Wright, Samar where the United
Nations entered into contract with the
Philippine Government to finance and
undertake jointly with the Bureau of
Mines and Geo-Sciences the exploration
work in the area. Other mineral
prospects of interest were the manganese
deposit in San Jose de Buan, the copper
prospect at Midway-Lunoy-Bunot, the coal
deposit in Giporlos, the gold prospect
at Pana-on Island, the phosphate rock
and asphalt
deposit in northwestern Leyte and the
copper prospect at Curajo-Palo in Leyte.
Several other metallic and nonmetallic
prospects were also investigated but due
to unfavorable result of geological
finding no further studies were
recommended on these prospects.
The activities undertaken during the
four-year program were reconnaissance
geological survey of Samar and Leyte
Islands, reassessment of all known
prospects in both islands, detailed
geological, geochemical and geophysical
surveys of promising deposits and
diamond drilling of two copper
prospects, one in Samar and one in
Leyte, and drilling of the
phosphate deposit in Bo. Bantique,
Isabel, Leyte.
