On the 28th of September 1965, Taal
Volcano in the province of Batangas,
Luzon Island, erupted at its
southwestern flank after a quiescent
period of 54 years. This was followed by
other eruptions in July 1966, August
1967, and February-March, 1968. Then
Mayon Volcano in the southeastern part
of Luzon also erupted in April, 1968,.
after a repose of 21 years. A few months
later, just before dawn on August 2,
1968 Luzon Island was rocked by a very
strong and destructive earthquake. In
Manila, the quake damaged some buildings
and caused a six-storey apartment
building to collapse completely. More
than 300 persons perished in that
tragedy.
