A portable field instrument, the Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) unit promises to be of much assistance in the field for both research study and exploration of dolomitic limestone and limestone deposits for cement raw materials. It makes practical use of well known characteristic thermal (exothermic and endothermic) reactions of calcite and dolomite and provide a rapid semi-quantitative method of determining magnesia in the limestone specimens.
