Abstract
The passage of the
Renewable Energy Act of 2008 (R.A. 9513) is an important part of the country’s long-term
response to its energy, environment, economic challenges.
The RE Law is a
timely strategic alternative that will foster sustainable growth, energy
independence and economic security for the country.
Specifically, it
aims to:
-
Promote the development of renewable energy (RE)
resources to further reduce the country’s reliance on generation systems
powered by imported fuels to minimize exposure of the economy to price
fluctuations in the international markets, the effects of which spiral down to
almost all sectors of the economy;
-
Increase the
utilization of renewable energy by institutionalizing its use, including the
development of national and local capabilities in the use of renewable energy
systems, by providing fiscal and non-fiscal incentives; and
-
Establish the
necessary infrastructure to carry out the specified mandates.
