FAULTS AND OTHER GEOLOGIC STRUCTURES OF METRO MANILA REVEALED BY DIGITAL TOPOGRAPHY

Major geologic structures in Metro Manila have been newly revealed by digital processing of topographic data. The 1:10,000 topographic map covering parts of Metro Manila was processed to aid in the recognition of geologic features using the principles of spectral analysis commonly applied in geophysics. The results indicate that there are significant geologic information that are concealed in the low relief, lack of significant and continuous outcrops, and extensive built-up cover of the metropolis. The structures newly recognized include large folds, depositional structures of the pyroclastic and volcaniclastic units, faults, contacts and the outcrop patterns of the geologic deposits. The significance of the results are threefold. First, the new geostructural maps can guide the systematic mapping of the deposits and structures in Metro Manila. Second, focus on the significance and nature of geologic structures would need serious reevaluation, particularly since hazards associated with previously unrecognized young faults would need to be considered in urban growth. Third, the methods used in this work have significant potential applications in other areas.
